#meinfernsehen 2021 – Partizipationsverfahren zur Zukunft des öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehens

Public service broadcasting is more controversial than ever. However, public discussions on this topic are usually led by the same experts and players from politics and civil society. Together with two great partners, we want to supplement this discourse in an innovative way and find out with the help of an online participation process: What needs to change, what should remain in television?

The cooperation project #meinfernsehen2021 was dedicated to the future of public television. The focus was on the question of whether the mission of public service broadcasting is still appropriate in a digitalized society and to what extent it corresponds to the expectations of the audience with regard to television.

In a multi-stage online participation process, citizens were able to discuss various questions on the topic and contribute their own ideas. The results of this participation process were finally presented at a final conference with the involvement of various media representatives and in a transparent manner for interested citizens. The key findings were also prepared for scientific publications and conferences.

The objectives can be summarized as follows:

  • To collect positions and arguments from the target group
  • Gaining suggestions for a renovation of the contract
  • Stimulate reflection and debate on the topic among participants
  • Enable education through participation in the discourse with the involvement of viewers
  • Demonstrate potential for identification with ÖRR by inviting people to exchange ideas
  • Contributing findings to public debate and academic discussion
  • Scientific publications

The project was designed to run for seven months (12/2020 to 06/2021) and was carried out in cooperation with the Grimme Institute and the Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb).

Further information on the project can be found on the official project website and in the final anthology (OpenAccess).
